Mary Lucy Grays was born on July 18, 1920 in Wetumpka,Alabama to the late Cezel and Morzell Winborn. She was one of ten beautiful children. All of Mary's siblings, brothers Ezra, Arizona, Tommy, Charlie, John, Leon, Coleman, and Herman, and one sister, all proceded her in death.
Mary attended school within Alabama school district, where she excelled in sports and was named an all American basketball player.
In 1945, Mary married her soulmate, Roosevelt Grays, who proceded her in death. To this union five daughters were born; three which preceded her in death Rose Mary Wilson, Ovetta 'Noon' Grays, and Vina 'Boo C' McKee, surviving daughters Sherri 'Ann' Orr, and Patricia 'Pat' Ruthledge. Also proceeding her in death was her son-in-laws Charlie Rutledge (Pat) and Bennie McKee (Vina).
Mary gave her life to God and confessed Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of Palestine Missionary Baptist Church In Detroit, MI, where she served under Rev. Samuel Ward until his passing. She then served under Rev. Ronald Burke. Mary was a devoted choir member and usher for several years. Keeping with her southern roots, she also enjoyed cooking, baking sweet potato pies, and watching sports, and spending time with her family.
Mary fought the good fight of faith, a long and full life, she departed peacefully on Thursday April 5, 2012. She was a kind woman who helped as many people as she could, and this is why she will be missed by the many people who loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters Sherri Orr (James) and Patricia Rutledge; two son-in-laws, Napoleon Wilson and James Orr; sixteen grandchildren, thirty-five great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren; and her dear and close friends, Marsha Houser and Rosie West; and host of other family members and friends.
